How to Improve your Mental Health

Over the past few years, especially after the pandemic, mental health has been on top of several conversations and social discussions. For most people everyday life has been chaotic with work, exercise, studies, housing, parenthood, social media, relationships . It seems we are flooded with information, things we have to do, goals we have to achieve, knowledge we have to catch up with, friends and family we have to answer, pictures we have to post. This overflood of information has been affecting people’s mental health. But what exactly is mental health? According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services,

“Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood”

As you could read different factors can affect our mental health and here are some tips on how you can prevent it:

  • Get enough sleep – having a good night of sleep will help you with your anxiety as well as going to be on the same time everyday. Having a routine will make your body stress less.
  • Healthy eating – eat fresh real food, homemade food, anything that is ultra processed your body will have difficulties digesting because of the amount of food preservative. Not to mention that you should avoid too much sugar and alcohol. Otherwise this kind of habits can trigger your anxiety and insomnia
  • Exercise – if there is one thing that can help you balance the other tips it’s exercise. Having some time so you can sweat, think and relieve yourself might not make sense in the beginning but once you get used to it you understand that it’s the time where you exercise, organize your thoughts and get tired. It usually helps your body not only with concentration, resistance and breathing but sleeping better as well. Check out here some tips on 5 Ways To Make Working Out A Habit.
  • Meet people – remember that mental health is also about having social relationships with people. Not necessarily romantic, it could be romantic, family, friends, coworkers, neighbors. Here meeting people and being social is the key. Feeling that you belong to a group that you have something in common with, afterall we humans are made to be social not isolated.
  • Get off the phone – don’t get off the phone literally, but don’t live your life just through a screen. You don’t need to know the news all the time or what is happening to your friends, or the influencers you follow. Do more things face to face.
  • Talk to someone – don’t hold your feelings just to yourself. Having a good friend that will listen to you might help you cope with stress and anxiety. Sometimes just by talking you feel better. And if you don’t or if your situation is too complicated for you to deal with even when opening up with your support group get professional help.

Mental health for some time was a taboo topic for most people and coping with it has been a big challenge. Keeping a balanced routine for sure will make your mental health better. Of course that this balance is a habit you don’t acquire overnight. So be patient, and go one step at a time. Don’t you know how to start? Start exercising at home with online classes.
